Southland Wilderness Medicine Group

We are a Southland based group of Medical and Allied Health Practitioners with an interest in Wilderness Medicine. Our locality provides us with unrestricted access to the wilderness areas of Southland and Otago, including the beautiful Lakes Districts around Queenstown.

We provide Medical training for Health Professionals with an interest in Wilderness Medicine. The training is suitable for those looking at undertaking medical care on expeditions and trips to remote areas or those with an interest in this subject. Southland Wilderness Medicine Group is the first Organisation in New Zealand to offer the “Advanced Wilderness Life Support” Course (AWLS). This course has been developed by experts associated with the Wilderness Medicine Society (WMS) in the US.

The Advanced wilderness Life Support Course is open to Doctors; Nurses; Dentists; Paramedics; Army Medics and Student Doctors.

Upcoming Courses

2012 August 6th-10th AWLS course, four half-days and one full day. (3 afternoons free to enjoy the snow.)

2012 December 5th-9th AWLS/Hump Ridge Track, five days.

Please note that if we do not reach the number of participants required for us to solely have the use of the Hump Ridge Track then we will need to cancel the course. If this does happen a full refund will be given to anyone who has already paid.

WildMed are proud to have helped a young Kickboxer “David Watts” from Invercargill realise his dream of going to Macedonia to compete for New Zealand at the Kickboxing World Championships. (Martin and Michelle’s Son)

David says:

As you may or may not be aware Kickboxing is an exciting and challenging sport that has roots as far back as Asia 2000 years ago and can be considered a hybrid martial art formed from the combination of elements of various traditional martial arts. It must also be said that it is certainly alive and well here in our community and throughout New Zealand.

My goal is simple. I plan on being the best that I can be. I believe that, that means not only as a member of the New Zealand Kickboxing team going to Skopje, Macedonia but also as a role model for younger kids and as a contributing member of our community.

This is my dream and with the support of individuals and organizations like WildMed, Kiwis Stat/Aus Stat Medical Recruitment in Christchurch, Frontier Medical in Auckland and other generous sponsors  I can succeed.
